From Belém to the Caribbean: A Breakthrough Year for Caribbean Philanthropy

2025 was a turning point, historically disruptive, painfully urgent and yet profoundly catalytic for the Caribbean. Climate shocks intensified, recovery gaps widened and the world was reminded, again, that frontline communities cannot wait for incremental solutions.

But COP30 redefined how philanthropy is understood.

For the first time, Caribbean philanthropy leadership didn’t appear as a footnote in global climate negotiations, it became the headline! Across three milestone engagements, the Caribbean Philanthropic Alliance (CARIPHIL) reshaped how Caribbean philanthropy will help reduce risk, build resilience and accelerate regional innovation. This is the story of a region stepping into its power.

1️⃣ A Global Debut: Announcing the Caribbean Climate Funders Commitment (CCFC): Global Convening of Philanthropies – November 14th 2025

WINGS and a coalition of global partners—including F20, GIFE, comuá, Wellcome Trust and the CARIPHIL—hosted the Global Convening of Philanthropies at COP30.

Before a room filled with philanthropic leaders and climate actors, Erika Miller, WINGS Philanthropy for Climate Lead, opened the evening with a call to strengthen global coordination.

There, CEO Anthea McLaughlin, announced the Caribbean Climate Funders Commitment (CCFC), a breakthrough framework that can align the 22 island states around shared climate priorities and equity-centered philanthropy leadership. The announcement was shared alongside Comuá, Global South House in amplifying local and regional climate commitments. The CCFC is aligned with the global call to action for Philanthropy for Climate.

Why it matters: This is the region’s first coordinated philanthropic mechanism designed by the Caribbean, for the Caribbean, signaling a new era of unity, strategy and global influence philanthropy.

2️⃣ Redefining Climate Emergency Response: Philanthropy Day – November 17th 2025

Hosted by Charities Aid Foundation, IDIS, Latimpacto, GIFE, Sitawi and WINGS, Philanthropy Day brought forward one of the most timely discussions of COP30: how philanthropy must respond to escalating climate emergencies. During a pivotal panel on climate emergencies, CARIPHIL addressed the lived reality of Hurricane Melissa and a widening US$2.5B recovery gap.

CARIPHIL’s message was clear:

✔️ Local leadership is not optional, it is the backbone of resilience.

✔️ The Trusted Partners model is one of the Caribbean’s most powerful assets.

✔️ Philanthropy must move from episodic charity to structural, long-term investment.

Why it matters: In the Caribbean, philanthropic capital is catalytic—its highest purpose is to strengthen systems, build long-term resilience and support locally-led adaptation.

3️⃣ A Blue Zone Breakthrough for the Caribbean: Philanthropy in Action – Official COP30 Session – November 18th 2025

Inside the COP30 Blue Zone, CARIPHIL shared the stage with UNFCCC Deputy Executive Secretary, Gates Foundation, Fundación Avina, Amazon Fund, Environmental Justice Fund, Climate Champions Team, SEE Foundation, Climate Emergency Collaboration Group (CECG).

CARIPHIL positioned the Caribbean Climate Funders Commitment, within the urgent context of Hurricane Melissa and the fragility of regional systems under stress and revealed in vivid detail how coordinated philanthropic action must accelerate resilience and the work of its Trusted Partners initiative.

This wasn’t just visibility, it was global validation that:

🔹 The Caribbean is a climate innovation region.

🔹 Our resilience frameworks have global relevance.

🔹 Coordinated philanthropy can accelerate implementation at scale.

Why it matters: The Caribbean achieved both a recognized seat and a leadership spotlight in the Blue Zone, underscoring the significance of Caribbean philanthropy and its Diaspora.

What Comes Next: 2026 and Beyond

CARIPHIL is building one of the most ambitious philanthropic ecosystems in the Global South and will be launching the CCFC at its Future Forward forum in Jamaica February 9th to 12th 2026.
